Serena's story, in her own words
“Outreach helped me see my future as a reality, not just a dream.”

Middle school
Finding a steady home
After moving between family members' homes through homelessness and instability, Serena asked her aunt if she could move to Carol Stream to finish middle school. Her aunt introduced her to Outreach, and a summer job got her in the door.

Gigi
A relationship that kept going
Serena grew close to Gigi, who encouraged her, motivated her, and was there for her at any hour. Gigi reminded her she is loved regardless of how well she performs.

College
Straight A student and college graduate
In her senior year, a hard season with her mental health led Serena to withdraw. Gigi helped her look into therapy, and Serena came back to complete her degree in spring 2023.

Today
Law school and leading
Serena is in law school at Northern Illinois University, serves as vice president of the Black Law Student Association, and started her own mental health and wellness organization.

“I'm grateful to get up every day and do stuff I only dreamed about.”
